Yoga mats need to be regularly cleaned to ensure hygiene and health, but they should not be washed with water and should be wiped. After wiping, yoga mats should not be directly exposed to the sun, but should be dried in a cool place to prevent accelerated aging. How to maintain a yoga mat? Clean hands and feet before practice, wipe the mat after practice, and clean the yoga mat every other week.
1、 Can yoga mats be sunbathed
Yoga mats should not be exposed to the sun. Most yoga mats are made by using rubber processing materials as a base for extensive compression molding to increase skin friendliness and match the extension during exercise. Therefore, if left exposed to sunlight for a long time, it can easily cause the yoga mat to become brittle and hard, making it prone to cracking or gradually becoming mottled and peeling during use, greatly reducing its lifespan.
2、 How to maintain yoga mats
1. Clean hands and feet before practice
Because during practice, hands and feet will constantly come into contact with the yoga mat, using the mat with clean hands and feet can not only prolong its lifespan but also to some extent prevent the spread of bacteria. Washing hands and feet can remove lotion/face cream, etc. They may make you slip during practice.
2. Wipe the mat after practice
After each practice, use a baby wet wipe or a specialized yoga mat wet wipe or soft cloth to wipe the mat once, and roll it up again after it dries.
3. The frequency of cleaning the mat
Generally speaking, if using a yoga mat 3-4 times a week, it is recommended to clean the mat every other week to maintain its hygiene. Even if it is not a complete cleaning, try to keep the yoga mat dry and tidy.
4. Cleaning method
The simplest way to clean is to mix two drops of dishwashing detergent with four bowls of water, spray it on the yoga mat, and then wipe it clean with a dry cloth. If the yoga mat is already very dirty, you can gently wipe it with a cloth dipped in laundry detergent, rinse it with clean water, and then roll up the yoga mat with a dry towel to absorb any excess water. The amount of laundry detergent should not be too much to prevent it from remaining on top and causing the mat to lose its anti slip effect.
5. Air drying method
After cleaning, the yoga mat should be placed in a ventilated and cool place to dry, and should not be exposed to direct sunlight, otherwise it will accelerate the aging of the material.
6. Storage method
When the yoga mat is not in use, roll it up and tie it with a wool buckle, or lay it flat without folding, otherwise it will have creases and serious cracking. The side used is on the outside, the side laid on the ground is on the inside, roll it up and tie it with straps, and put it in the yoga bag.
